OUR STUDIO
Our sunlit letterpress and design studio in Brooklyn is our little nook of the world where we explore and deliver honest work for those of us need it.
That’s us in a sentence, but hey, there’s always more to the story.
We began in 2015 with an idea to simply connect a lot of loose dots out there.
For all of us, this life can be a wild triumph of a thing and sometimes it can really suck, so we started creating honest work to speak to our experiences that could connect all of us and act as a modern antidote.
But we also wanted to contribute hand-touched craftsmanship full of calm composition and relaxed strokes of color, so Tack & Ward became our intentional and holistic effort to bring a warmer patina to life.
Every piece is a small work of art that contributes to a greater connectivity between us.
OUR PROCESS
We play around with a mix of methods like antique letterpress, risograph, foil stamp and hand painted details in our studio but always start every piece by hand. The painting, drawing, lettering, everything is a bespoke and intentional expression experiment with the textures, colors and patinas we love.
We pair our pieces with simple tree-free cotton paper and envelopes.
OUR WORK
All of our work visually speaks to sun-bleached travels, earthy inspiration and happy milestones, and our most recent collection carries this dreamy vision forward.
Each greeting card and art print pulls from simple shapes that natural landscapes make from different points of view. With this organic approach, every work is a nice exhale of supportive sentiment drawn from personal peaks and valleys and the conversations we have about both.
Stay with us as we expand our eyes and hands into textiles, wallpaper, gift wrap and home goods in the near future!
OUR NAME
Our name comes from sailing and the beauty of where the wind can lead you to. Tack - how we shift directions - and windward or leeward - if we’re riding with or against the wind. It represents how we tack and ward as humans while we maneuver the adventure of life we’re all in.
HI. IT’S ME, STEF
For the last five years, I’ve created work that matters - work that offers strength and laughter, solace and comfort, mischief and care. Using my hands to create these pieces has been such a labour and a joy, and at times the very thing that has kept me afloat.
Over the past few years, my heart has experienced its fair share of mental health struggles and physical illnesses, so creation has been key. When I put it out into the world and watch you guys feel it and love it and send it my heart is so refreshed, so full. It’s made lighter again.
And isn’t that the gift for all of us? With creativity that truly connects us, we’re all made lighter, not only by sharing common tactile taste and whimsical travel dreams, but by sharing our joys and our pains through simple keepsakes.
I’d say it’s the best kind of work.
Thank you for supporting me in it.
It means the world.
